Design Description
Janine Jansen was created as a brand to represent quality hairdressing at affordable prices. The client had a marketing strategy based around this idea, and wanted the space to reflect this. It had to be strong in signage and strong in identity using a simple colour palette of black and white. The space had to project a level of quality but still appeal to the everyday customer. The complete budget was a conservative $160,000. To save costs the existing shop-front was to be kept and incorporated into the new design, and plumbing items were to be positioned as close as possible to existing plumbing. A certain amount of work-stations had to be achieved to make it viable. Careful space planning had to take place in considering all of the above and to achieve a comfortable working environment for staff and the general traffic flow to all areas. Recessed merchandise displays were created to conserve space and full length mirrors utilised to create an illusion of more space. The curved wall was introduced as a demark-point between the reception and work areas, allowing a backdrop for the branding, and just enough separation so that the whole space is still open, yet private enough so customers don't feel exposed. Although the colour palette is strong, subtle finishes and textures were used to soften the contrasts. Timber flooring and warm temperature lighting were introduced to carry warmth through the space; this ensured the desired ambience and comfort for the customers. Since opening the salon has been doing incredibly well, with customers loving the level of service and enjoying the environment. It was important to achieve this, as this was the first Janine Jansen prototype designed to this marketing strategy, with the formula in place the client can confidently continue to grow the business.
